Our HOMA-IR calculator estimates your level of insulin resistance using your fasting blood glucose and fasting insulin values. This calculation—often referred to as an insulin resistance test—is widely used in cardiology and endocrinology to evaluate metabolic health and assess the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
What Is Insulin Resistance?
Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. To compensate, the pancreas releases more insulin in an attempt to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Over time, however, this balance becomes harder to maintain and blood glucose levels may begin to rise.
People with insulin resistance have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and fatty liver disease. In many cases, insulin resistance progresses without obvious symptoms and is detected only through blood tests.
A HOMA-IR value below 2.5 is generally considered normal. Values between 2.5 and 5 suggest moderate insulin resistance, while values above 5 indicate a high level of insulin resistance.

How Should I Interpret My HOMA-IR Result?
A high insulin resistance result is not a diagnosis but rather an important warning sign. Lifestyle changes can play a major role in improving insulin sensitivity.
Regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and following a balanced diet that limits refined carbohydrates and added sugars can significantly help reduce insulin resistance.
For a more accurate evaluation, it is recommended to discuss your results with an endocrinologist or cardiologist, who can assess your individual risk and recommend appropriate next steps.
